A metal, tile, or slate roof sheds snow all at once — hundreds of pounds sliding off in a single sheet. Snow guards hold that load on the roof so it can melt off safely, instead of tearing out gutters, crushing landscaping, or landing on a walkway. Why your roof needs snow retention

Smooth roofing surfaces — standing-seam metal, tile, slate, and synthetic slate — don't grip snow the way asphalt shingles do. When a storm cycle ends and the sun comes out, the whole snowpack can release at once. That's a roof avalanche, and it causes real damage:

  • Torn-off gutters and downspouts — the most common casualty, and an avoidable repair bill every winter.
  • Crushed landscaping, decks, vehicles, and HVAC units sitting below the eave line.
  • Danger at entryways and walkways — a sliding snowpack can injure anyone standing under it.
  • Liability for commercial properties — sidewalks and parking areas below a shedding roof are a risk you don't want to carry.

Systems we sell and install

Pad-style snow guards

Individual guards installed in an engineered staggered pattern across the roof field. The right fit for many standing-seam, tile, and slate roofs — low-profile and effective.

Bar & rail systems

Continuous one-, two-, or three-rail systems mounted along the eave. The strongest option for steep pitches, long rafter lengths, and heavy mountain snow loads.

Clamp-on (non-penetrating)

For standing-seam metal roofs, guards clamp to the seam without drilling — preserving your panel finish and your roof warranty.

Adhesive-mounted guards

Bonded guards for specific roof types where mechanical fastening isn't possible, installed under the right temperature and cure conditions.

Layout is engineering, not guesswork

The most common snow guard failure isn't the guard — it's the layout. A single row of guards at the eave concentrates the entire snowpack load on a few attachment points, and they rip out, often taking panels with them. Proper snow retention is calculated from:

  • Roof pitch and rafter length (eave to ridge)
  • Ground snow load for your specific Colorado location
  • Roof surface type and how readily it sheds
  • Panel seam spacing or tile profile for attachment points
  • What's below each eave — entries, walkways, parking, landscaping

We design the layout to manufacturer spacing charts and local snow load data, so the whole system shares the load the way it's supposed to.

New roof or retrofit

The cleanest time to install snow retention is with a new metal or tile roof — it's part of our standard spec conversation for snow-shedding materials. But most of our snow guard work is retrofitting existing roofs. Clamp-on systems for standing-seam metal can usually be added any time of year with no penetration and no warranty impact.

Common questions

Do I need snow guards on an asphalt shingle roof?

Usually not. Shingles grip snow and melt it off gradually. Snow retention is primarily for metal, tile, slate, and other smooth-surface roofs that shed in sheets.

Will snow guards damage my roof or void the warranty?

Not when installed correctly. Clamp-on systems attach to standing seams without penetrating the panel, which is why manufacturers approve them. Adhesive and mechanically fastened systems are chosen to match your roof type and installed to the manufacturer's spec.

How many snow guards does my roof need?

It depends on pitch, rafter length, snow load, and roof surface — a proper layout is calculated, not eyeballed. We'll measure and spec the right pattern during a free inspection.

Can you add snow guards to my existing metal roof?

Yes — most of our installs are retrofits on existing standing-seam roofs. Clamp-on guards attach to the seams with no drilling, so the job is fast and warranty-safe.
